Taking your dog to the Belgian coast

By Yora Vandenhaute October 9, 2025

Outside the busy summer season, we love heading to the coast for a good dose of sea air. We go in summer too, but that’s when Winston — our true sea dog — doesn’t get as much freedom on the beach. And he’s not thrilled about that! 😉 The moment his paws hit the sand, he lights up: sprinting along the tide line, splashing through the waves, chasing seagulls, or endlessly running after his ball. It really doesn’t get any better.

Luckily, there are plenty of beaches along the Belgian coast that welcome dogs. The rules vary from town to town, so it’s worth checking in advance where and when your four-legged friend can run free. Generally, outside the high season (usually from October until the end of March), dogs are allowed off-leash on most beaches, while in summer specific dog zones or time slots apply.
👉 Tip: Always check the signs at the beach entrance — they’ll tell you exactly where and when your dog is allowed.

🐶 Fun things to do with your dog at the beach

A day by the sea with your dog means endless fun. Here are some ideas:

  • Treasure hunt in the sand: Hide a toy or ball and let your dog dig it up — a fun mental workout and great entertainment.
  • Go for a swim: Many dogs love splashing around in shallow water. Just watch out for strong currents and sharp shells.
  • Early morning or evening walks: Head out during quieter hours so your dog can explore freely, sniff around, and maybe make some new friends.
  • Beach picnic: Bring a blanket and a few treats (for both of you). After all that running and playing, relaxing together in the sun is pure bliss. Just don’t forget to clean up afterwards! 😉

🚫 What not to do

  • Leave poop behind: Always bring waste bags and keep the beach clean.
  • Let your dog bother others: Not everyone feels comfortable around dogs. Keep yours on a leash where required.

☀️ Handy tips for a dog-friendly day at the beach

  • Fresh water: Dogs shouldn’t drink seawater, so bring plenty of fresh water to keep them hydrated.
  • Snacks and treats: Pack some healthy rewards for after a walk or a game in the sand.
  • Toys: A frisbee or ball makes beach time even more fun.
  • Towel: Bring one to dry your dog after a swim or some fun in the wet sand.
  • Long lead: For dogs that can’t be fully off-leash, a long line or retractable leash gives them freedom while keeping things under control.
